Head Tilt Chin Lift Technique

Head tilt chin lift maneuver which is a part of airway management in first aid is very crucial step to saving people's life. This technique is only can be applied to people who is unconscious.

When you do that, you help the victims to maintain their airway. There are some precautions for first aider to be awared, are you may not perform if neck injury suspected, use Jaw Thrust instead. You also have to avoid closing mouth or compressing chin soft-tissue that can obstructs airway instead

  • Lie the victim on their back.
  • One hand on forehead to stabilize the head by gently tilt head back.
  • Place two fingers below the chin, find the recess, lift up gently then.
The airway is now opened and you must continue to hold in this position until more advanced airway adjuncts can be used, by yourself if you are trained and comfortable or by an advanced care practitioner.

WARNING:
The key points are different between adult/child and infant. In adult/child, you can extend victim's head slightly, different from an infant that you may not overextend the head (put only in neutral position/sniffing position)
